Amsterdam May 05

On Saturday April 30th Jayne & Mark escaped to Amsterdam for the weekend. Jo & Sophie kindly agreed to look after the girls and M&J caught an early flight out of Norwich.

The 30th April in the Netherlands is a Public Holiday to celebrate their Queens Birthday. The Dutch celebrate this day by holding massive street parties and parading through the city. Apparently two million young Dutch revellers poured out of Central Station on this day, most of them dressed in something orange, and proceeded along a route through the city and back to the station.

Those people that live in the city took the opportunity to hold a "car boot sale" on their door step and proceeded to watch two million pissed dutchmen trample over their old belongings.

Each person coming off the train had their own supply of Heineken and the streets were knee deep in empty cans by midday.

The Canals quickly filled with boats overflowing with crazy people and huge speakers pumping out the latest Techno. At one point it all ground to a halt whilst the latest Dutch popstar took centre "boat" to strut his stuff. He was really good actually!

The day after all was back to normal, well apart from a few hung over Dutchmen. The streets had been cleaned and the city returned back to the relaxing place it should be. The best coffee to be had was found at the "Cafe de Jaren", a lovely waterside bar with great Cappuccino and Espresso.
